Wilson Promontory Marine National Park receives international award
Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park has received Australia’s first Global Ocean Refuge Platinum Award (GLORES Award). The award honours Parks Victoria’s commitment to protecting marine life. It recognises the work of South Gippsland marine rangers and 30 partner organisations and volunteers.
The key criteria to achieve the award include in-water monitoring, marine pest programs and volunteer surveys. The use of the latest technologies in seafloor monitoring helped immensely in mapping the park.
Wilsons Promontory is the largest Marine National Park in Victoria, providing full protection for its nature and wildlife. This includes kelp forests, coral-covered caves, seal breeding colonies and the Great White Shark. Thanks to the GLORES award, it now joins ten other marine protected areas, which make up the Global Ocean Refuge System.
