We currently have an opportunity for a Research Assistant to be a part of the Deakin Marine Mapping team within the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. The Research Assistant reports to an Associate Professor in Marine Science (Deakin’s Recipient Representative) for Coastal Erosion and Biodiversity Assessment projects. The role will work closely with academic staff associated with the Victorian Coastal Monitoring Program, from both Deakin University and the University of Melbourne. The position builds and maintains effective relationships internally and with external partners, particularly the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria.
The primary purpose of the Research Assistant is to provide support for data acquisition, processing, data management and reporting for Coastal Erosion and Biodiversity Assessments in Victoria. This position will also provide assistance to research projects undertaken by the Deakin Marine Mapping group, including maintenance of mapping and underwater video equipment.
Your key responsibilities will include but are not limited to the need to:

Assist research academics in the collection and analysis of data

Ensure the effective management, calibration and maintenance of equipment and associated laboratory resources used in the local area; acquire and ensure appropriate stocks of consumables are maintained

Draft presentations and research reports, review and edit research documents in consultation with relevant research staff,

Assist in implementing the research quality control systems / procedures, including the provision of effective and secure data management for all collections related to these projects

Organise meetings, presentations, prepare reports, and maintain databases and administrative systems.

Support researchers in the grant lifecycle, assisting in the preparation of applications, creation, monitoring and reporting of budgets

Support, coordinate and conduct academic activities including interviews, focus groups, seminars, workshops

Liaise with agencies

Organise research related events, seminars, visits, presentations and other functions

Design and maintain databases to store information on research performance, perform data cleansing, manipulate data and provide reports, including undertaking basic statistical analysis tasks in python, R, and ArcGIS Pro (or other GIS program)

Utilise the research specific IT systems and applications to assist with research and analysis, including data modelling, data mining.
To be successful, you’ll have:

A degree in Marine Science, or equivalent.

Ability to use Kongsberg’s sonar acquisition software: Seafloor Information System (SIS) and software to control video systems and data processing

Ability to process and produce deliverables from multi-beam sonar data using programs: e.g. Caris HIPS and SIPS, Fledermaus and PostPac MMS.

Good skills in GIS, and R or Python (for habitat analysis).
