Research Interests

Dr Jacquomo Monk is a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania. He leads the Shelf Ecology Research Group (https://shelfecology.com/), which integrates ecological theory with data science, AI/ML, and geospatial technologies to transform how marine shelf ecosystems are monitored, modelled, and managed. His work focuses on translating ecological evidence and best-practice standards into effective policy and decision-making.

He plays a leading role in national-scale initiatives such as the NESP Marine and Coastal Hub (https://www.nespmarinecoastal.edu.au/), and provides strategic leadership for Seamap Australia (https://seamapaustralia.org/) and IMOS SQUIDLE+ (https://squidle.org/). Through these programs, he drives innovative, data-driven approaches that strengthen Australia’s capacity for marine conservation and ecosystem reporting. His expertise spans quantitative ecology, spatial analysis, machine learning, and conservation, underpinned by extensive experience in benthic habitat characterisation, mesophotic ecosystem ecology, and evaluating human pressures on marine environments.
