Research Interests

Dr. Siegmund Nuyts is a coastal engineer and remote sensing specialist with expertise in UAV-based monitoring, hydrodynamic modelling, and coastal data science. Originally from Belgium, he holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from University College Cork, Ireland and brings over a decade of international research experience across Australia, France, and Ireland. His technical toolkit spans drone operations (RePL certified), LiDAR processing, Python and MATLAB development, GIS, and MIKE 21 hydrodynamic modelling.

Currently, Siegmund works as a Data Scientist on the National Coastal Drone Programme (NCDP), where he's focused on building the processing pipelines and quality assurance workflows that turn raw drone data into reliable, standardised products for coastal monitoring across Australia. He thrives on the challenge of pulling together diverse datasets to answer fundamental questions about how beaches work, and enjoys making complex data more accessible and useful for researchers, managers, and decision-makers alike. Before joining Deakin, Siegmund has worked at the University of Melbourne, CNRS in France, and NUI Galway in Ireland, picking up experience along the way in everything from shoreline dynamics and blue carbon restoration to coastal video analysis and nearshore hydrodynamics.
