The Value of Coastal Wetlands to People and Nature

The Australian Mapping Ocean Wealth project evaluates coastal wetlands as a social and economic benefit, at a scale relevant to regional policy making. The project constitutes three years of marine service research, spatial mapping and communication of south-eastern Australian coastal wetlands.

Key Findings

Coastal wetlands contribute 36 million dollars per year to Australia’s nearshore commercial fisheries.

As a recreational fishing haven, sea grasses are valued at 33 million dollars per year.

Victorian and New South Wales wetlands store 36,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Many thanks to the Deakin University and the Nature Conservancy scientists involved.
